Although the shipbuilding market has undergone huge demand and price swing, major shipbuilding countries -- China, Japan and South Korea still keep ahead in the global shipbuilding and repairing industry, the three major shipbuilding countries accounting for nearly 90% in global market.
However, some Southeast Asian countries gradually become emerging and competitive in shipbuilding. Under the support of the government’s financial funds, the Southeast Asian countries have obtained some big shipbuilding orders as the low labor cost, better infrastructure and friendly economic policy.
With the development of global shipbuilding industry, some countries in Southeast Asia is fast becoming a new shipbuilding bridgehead, such as Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, these countries gradually enhance the ability to meet various challenge to gain a place in the competitive market.
According to statistics, more than 600 new ships will be built in the Southeast Asian shipyard in 2015. Construction capacity is expected to be more than 4,800,000 tons. From the view of new ship orders type, container ship accounted for 37%, bulk cargo ship accounted for 7%, oil tankers accounted for 9%, cargo ship accounted for 5%, and marine vessels accounted for 4%.
Analysts pointed out that although the shipbuilding market is difficult, Southeast Asian manufactures perform well. In the medium term, Indonesia and Vietnam grow fastest. In addition, high-quality workers and low-cost labor in Southeast Asia attract overseas investors.
With the development of Chinese economy, the traditional advantages of shipbuilding industry have evaporated, and Southeast Asia will become the future of the world’s important shipbuilding place.
